The appellation

Hidden in the heights of the Côte de Beaune, Saint-Romain is encircled by cliffs. The vineyards, facing south–south and north–north-east, are distinguished by their elevation (between 280 and 400 meters above sea level). Within this marl and limestone landscape, the clay-rich parcels are perfectly suited to Chardonnay (57 hectares), while Pinot Noir is not to be outdone, covering around 40 hectares. This Saint-Romain wine is made from 20% of the lieu-dit “Sous Roches” and 80% from “Les Jarrons” in the lower part of the village. The vines, averaging around thirty years of age, are planted on very stony soils and produce wines of beautiful balance. The ageing lasts from 12 to 14 months, with no new oak barrels used.

The wine and the style

After a light settling of the must, the juices are transferred into barrels, mainly 600-liter casks as well as some 228-liter barrels, where both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place. We use approximately 5 to 20% new oak, with the wood sourced primarily from Allier forests and featuring a long, light toast. The first racking occurs after about one year of barrel ageing, marking the beginning of the second phase, which lasts 4 to 6 months in stainless steel tanks in order to preserve the wine’s freshness and tension. We conclude the ageing process with a light fining, followed by an equally gentle filtration before bottling.

The vintage

After 2022, another year that brings joy to our hearts. Free from major climatic turmoil, graced by a gentle winter and a splendid spring bloom, 2023 quickly hinted at a generous harvest to come. Summer unfolded like a mysterious dance—between waves of heat and refreshing coolness, dry spells and sudden, stormy rains. The harvest reached its full potential, with varying ripeness from one plot to another, making 2023 a vintage that reveals, more than ever, the singular soul of each terroir.
We began picking on Thursday, August 31st—ten days earlier than we had first anticipated at the start of summer—for a harvest that lasted two full weeks. Picked at dawn, the fruit was beautiful, healthy, and plentiful, both in whites and reds. The generosity allowed for a meticulous selection of only the finest bunches. The alcoholic fermentations began effortlessly, as if guided by nature’s quiet hand.
In white, 2023 is a shining vintage—sunny yet well-balanced. The grapes, ripe and healthy, exude irresistible aromas of indulgent fruit. On the palate, the wines are expressive and harmonious, with pleasant freshness thanks to the relatively early harvest.

Tasting note

Fullish yellow. This is sunny and rounded for St-Romain. In the mouth the wine becomes more typical of the appellation, with excellent energy and a long finish. Still on the softer side.
